program

The Junior Toddler program focuses on providing the warm, responsive caregiving that is so essential to a young child’s healthy development and sense of wellbeing.

Our Junior Toddler classroom is carefully prepared for children who are 12-23 months of age at the beginning of the school year. The Junior Toddler classroom is purposefully created to support the learning and development of this age group with materials that promote music and movement, artistic representation, dramatic play, cooking and caring for babies in a home center, scientific and technological exploration and the discovery of a variety of interesting materials including books and building blocks along with an indoor gross motor and soft play area. Our Toddler children go for stroller walks each day on our quiet neighborhood street while also spending time in their dedicated smaller playground and the larger garden each day. Visiting the bunnies is also a popular activity and the children enjoy observing the bunnies in an intentionally created large area that that we have prepared to closely mimic the natural habitat of bunnies rather than have the bunnies in cages where they tend to be dormant. This gives children the privilege of observing the natural behaviors of bunnies such as burrowing, hopping, digging and eating plants. The bunny area is across from our garden area where the children have the opportunity to plant, care for and grow vegetables to feed the bunnies. We believe that the way we care for our bunnies teaches children that human beings have an important responsibility to ensure the best possible environment for animals in their care.

While all children feel secure and thrive when they experience consistency of care between home and the center, very young children particularly benefit from this. Therefore, the schedule and planned activities for the Junior Toddler children in our care are reviewed on a daily and weekly basis through careful observation of children, reflection, and communication between teachers and with parents. The daily schedule follows a predictable sequence to give the children a sense of security while also being flexible enough to meet the needs of very young children.
